Jorma Panula has influenced a whole generation of young conductors. On the international music scene, he is one of the few with a reputation for being a conductor pedagogue. Panula was professor of orchestra conducting at the Sibelius Academy 1973–1993. He is also a known composer and arranger of music. Panula has given master classes in Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Italy, Russia, the USA, and Australia.
Among his most renowned students you will find Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Osmo Vänskä, and Sakari Oramo. After his retirement, Panula founded a class for young, talented conductors at the academy. Master conductor Jorma Panula teaches how the orchestra conductor can convey successes and failures to the musicians. He also reminds us that the conductor is there for the sake of the orchestra, not for the concert audience.
